908 split from 201 in the early 1990s for western New Jersey. In 1997, 908 gave up its central/shore area to new code 732, and 973 split off for the northern interior, leaving 201 the northeast corner.
In 1999, 856 split from 609 to serve Camden and Cherry Hill in the southwest.
By 2001, splitting gave way to overlays: 551 over 201, 862 over 973, and 848 over 732 — completing today's nine-code map.
