312 is the original Chicago area code — and now one of the smallest area codes in the country. In 1947 it covered nearly all of the Illinois side of the Chicago metro. Two splits later, it covers only downtown Chicago and the neighborhoods right around it, an area of just a few square miles. That shrinking footprint is exactly why "312" became shorthand for downtown, and why Chicagoans celebrate it every March 12.
This guide covers where 312 numbers are, how 312 relates to 773 and 872, how to dial, and what to know before answering — or buying — a 312 number.

Where Does the 312 Code Cover?

The 312 area is roughly bounded by North Avenue to the north, Western Avenue to the west, 35th Street to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east (Wikipedia, area code 312). Everything else in the city of Chicago is 773 (with 872 overlaid on both).
Neighborhoods inside that box include:
- The Loop — the central business district, LaSalle Street's financial corridor, the theater district and City Hall.
- River North and Streeterville — north of the river; Streeterville includes Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University's Chicago campus.
- Gold Coast and Old Town (south of North Avenue) — the dense residential blocks along the lake north of downtown.
- West Loop and the Near West Side — including the Illinois Medical District and the United Center.
- South Loop and the Near South Side — home to Columbia College Chicago and Roosevelt University, and stretching south toward 35th Street.
If you're trying to place a Chicago number: a 312 number was probably issued downtown, a 773 number elsewhere in the city, and an 872 number could be either. Number porting and mobile phones mean none of that tells you where the caller is today.
History of the 312 Area Code
312 was one of the original 86 area codes created in 1947, and at first it covered nearly the entire Illinois side of the Chicago metropolitan area, city and suburbs alike (Wikipedia). Since then:
- November 11, 1989 — the suburbs leave. The suburbs were moved to the new 708, leaving 312 to the city of Chicago. In 1996, 708 was itself split three ways, with the northern suburbs getting 847 and the western suburbs 630 (Wikipedia, area code 708).
- October 11, 1996 — 773 takes the neighborhoods. All of the city outside the downtown area was split off as 773, leaving 312 as a small downtown enclave surrounded by 773.
- November 7, 2009 — 872 is overlaid. Rather than split again, a new code, 872, was overlaid on both 312 and 773, so new Chicago numbers can come from 872 anywhere in the city. Since then, local calls in Chicago must be dialed with the full 11-digit number (10 digits from cell phones) (Wikipedia, area code 872).
The 872 area code guide covers the overlay in more detail.
312 Day
Because the 1996 split made 312 synonymous with downtown, the code has become a point of civic pride. Every March 12 (3/12), Chicago marks "312 Day" — in past years with more than forty bars and restaurants pouring Goose Island's 312 Urban Wheat Ale for $3.12, alongside concerts around the city (ABC7 Chicago).
The same kind of identity has formed around other downtown codes — the 415 area code in San Francisco is a similar case.
Dialing and Time Zone
Dialing: With three codes sharing the city, every local call in Chicago needs the area code — 1 + 312 + number from a landline, or 312 + number from a mobile. Old phone systems, alarm panels and CRM dial rules set up for seven digits will fail.
Time zone: Central Time — CST (UTC−6) in winter, CDT (UTC−5) during daylight saving time. Chicago is one hour behind New York and two hours ahead of Los Angeles, so an East Coast team calling at 9 a.m. its time reaches downtown Chicago at 8 a.m. London is 6 hours ahead of Chicago for most of the year (the gap briefly changes in March and late October/early November, when the US and UK switch clocks on different dates).
Is a 312 Area Code Call a Scam?
Most 312 calls are exactly what they appear to be — offices, hospitals, restaurants and residents in downtown Chicago. But 312 is one of the most recognizable area codes in the US, and recognizable local numbers are what scammers like to fake. The FTC's rule of thumb applies: scammers "can make any name or number show up on your caller ID" (FTC, Phone Scams).
Judge the call by what it asks for, not the area code:
- Threats of arrest or legal trouble from someone claiming to be a government agency or the police, with a demand to pay now.
- Payment by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or a payment app — the FTC lists these as the methods scammers insist on because the money is hard to recover.
- Debts you don't recognize, pushed with urgency.
- "Tech support" calls about a virus on your device, asking you to install remote-access software.

Getting a 312 Number for Your Business
For businesses, the appeal of 312 is simple: it tells Chicagoans "downtown." Law firms, consultancies, financial services, hotels and River North agencies have historically wanted 312 numbers for that reason. A few things to know:
- 312 vs 872: both are equally local across the city, but Chicagoans recognize 312 immediately, while 872 is less familiar. Which you can get depends on a provider's inventory, so if the downtown signal matters to you, check 312 availability first.
- 312 vs 773: a 773 number reads as "Chicago, but not downtown." For a neighborhood business in Logan Square or Hyde Park, that may actually be the better fit.
- You don't need a Loop address. A virtual 312 number rings wherever you route it — mobile app, desktop or call queue — so a firm outside Illinois can still answer as a downtown Chicago number.
- Port, don't replace. Local number portability lets you move an existing 312 number to a new provider and keep it on your website and business cards.
- Help customers trust it. Use the same number everywhere you're listed, and tell customers how you will and won't contact them, so a spoofed call is easier to spot.

With Rozper, you can search for an available 312 number, set routing, business hours, voicemail-to-email and call recording from one dashboard, and add numbers for other cities on the same account.
Managing Your 312 Number: Common Situations
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Outbound calls fail from an older PBX or CRM | Update dial rules to include the area code (1 + 10 digits on landlines) |
| Customers on the coasts call outside Chicago hours | Set business hours in Central Time and route after-hours calls to voicemail-to-email |
| No 312 number available that you like | Consider 872 (same area) or port an existing 312 number |
| Customers suspicious of a "312" call | Publish one consistent number and explain how you contact customers |
| Tracking multiple Chicago campaigns | Use separate local numbers per campaign, all routed to the same team |
FAQs
Is 312 a Chicago area code?
Yes — but only downtown Chicago. 312 covers the Loop and the inner neighborhoods roughly bounded by North Avenue, Western Avenue, 35th Street and Lake Michigan. The rest of the city is 773, and 872 overlays both.
What is the difference between 312, 773 and 872?
312 is the original 1947 code; since October 11, 1996 it has covered only downtown. 773 was split off that day for the rest of the city. 872 was added on November 7, 2009 as an overlay on both 312 and 773, so an 872 number can be anywhere in Chicago.
Do Chicago suburbs use 312?
Not since November 11, 1989, when the suburbs were moved to area code 708. Suburban numbers today use 708 or the codes later split or overlaid from it, such as 847 and 630 (both split from 708 in 1996).
Do I need to dial the area code for local calls in Chicago?
Yes. Since the 872 overlay began in 2009, local calls in Chicago are dialed with the full number: 1 + area code + number from landlines, or area code + number from cell phones.
What time zone is 312 in?
Central Time: UTC−6 in winter (CST) and UTC−5 during daylight saving time (CDT).
What is 312 Day?
An informal Chicago celebration of the area code held every March 12 (3/12), with promotions at bars and restaurants and concerts around the city.
Can I get a 312 number without an office in Chicago?
Yes. A virtual 312 number can be routed to any phone or app, anywhere. Rozper provides local 312 numbers with call forwarding, IVR, call recording, voicemail-to-email, SMS and analytics.
