615 is the area code for Nashville and the ring of counties around it. It once covered most of Tennessee. A series of splits in the 1990s cut it down to the Nashville region, and since 2015 it has shared that region with a second code, 629. So a Nashville number today can start with either one.
| Core area | Nashville (Davidson County) and the surrounding counties of Middle Tennessee |
| Main cities | Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Brentwood, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Lebanon, Springfield |
| Created | 1954, split from 901 |
| Overlay | 629 (numbers issued from March 28, 2015) |
| Local dialing | 10 digits, mandatory since February 28, 2015 |
| Time zone | Central (CST, UTC−6 / CDT, UTC−5) |
What the 615 area code covers

615 and 629 serve Nashville (Davidson County) and twelve surrounding counties (Wikipedia). The overlay notice sent to customers names Franklin, Gallatin, Hendersonville, Lebanon, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Springfield as typical 615 communities (United Communications overlay notice). That means the code reaches:
- Davidson County: Nashville itself.
- South: Franklin and Brentwood in Williamson County, and Murfreesboro and Smyrna in Rutherford County.
- North and northeast: Hendersonville and Gallatin in Sumner County, and Springfield in Robertson County.
- East: Lebanon and Mount Juliet in Wilson County.
The whole 615/629 area is on Central Time. Nashville is one hour behind New York and two hours ahead of Los Angeles.
Where 615 ends: the neighboring codes

Many places people think of as Middle Tennessee are not in 615. Since 1997, area code 931 has almost completely surrounded 615. It covers Clarksville, Cookeville, Columbia and Tullahoma, which all had 615 numbers until then. East Tennessee (Chattanooga, Knoxville and the Tri-Cities) left 615 even earlier, for 423 (Wikipedia).
So a 615 or 629 number points to the Nashville metro specifically. A 931 number is from the wider ring of Middle Tennessee around it.
How 615 went from two-thirds of Tennessee to one metro

615 is often described as one of the original 1947 area codes, but it isn't. When the national plan launched in 1947, all of Tennessee had a single code, 901. Here is how 615 came about and then shrank (Wikipedia):
- 1954: In a flash cut, most of the state east of the Tennessee River's western bend was moved to the new code 615. 901 was left with Memphis and West Tennessee.
- 1995: The eastern part of 615, including Chattanooga, Knoxville and the Tri-Cities, became area code 423.
- September 1997: The outer parts of Middle Tennessee, including Clarksville, Cookeville, Columbia and Tullahoma, were split off as 931. That left 615 roughly the size it is today.
- October 2013: The Tennessee Regulatory Authority approved an all-services overlay for 615 instead of another split (TRA Docket 11-00018).
- 2014–2015: The 629 overlay was introduced. Details are below.
The pattern is that every time numbers ran short, regulators split off the areas farther from Nashville. By 2013 the remaining territory was the Nashville metro itself, and another split would have divided one metro area. An overlay avoided that, because nobody had to change their existing number.
The 629 overlay and 10-digit dialing
An overlay adds a new area code on top of an existing one. Existing numbers keep their code, and new lines can be assigned from either code. The customer notice for the 615 overlay gives these dates (United Communications):
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| July 26, 2014 | Permissive period: 10-digit local dialing works, but 7-digit calls still connect |
| February 28, 2015 | 10-digit dialing mandatory. A 7-digit local call plays a recording and doesn't connect |
| March 28, 2015 | New lines can be assigned 629 numbers |
Area code 629 was added as an overlay across the entire 615 region (see our 629 guide), so callers dial 10 digits for every local call, even 615-to-615. Local calls stay local and long-distance calls still need 1 + 10 digits. 911 and the other N11 codes (211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, 811) are still three digits.
If you set up phones, alarms or a PBX in Nashville before 2015, check for stored seven-digit numbers. Those were supposed to be reprogrammed during the permissive period, and any that were missed will fail.
615 or 629: does it matter?
Not for how calls work. Both codes cover exactly the same area, calls between them are local, and rates are the same. The only difference is age. Every 629 number was issued on or after March 28, 2015, while a 615 number may be decades old. Whether one is available depends on a provider's inventory, since new numbers come from both codes.
Getting a Nashville number for a business

You don't need a Tennessee office or address for a 615 or 629 number. Virtual phone providers, Rozper among them, can assign a Nashville number and forward calls to any phone or app your team uses. To keep a number you already have, you can usually port it to the new provider.
Specific to this region:
- Save every number in 10-digit format in CRMs, dialers and forwarding rules. The 615/629 area has required it since 2015.
- Choose 615 or 931 based on where your customers are. Clients in Franklin or Murfreesboro will see a 615 number as local. Customers in Clarksville or Cookeville are used to 931.
- Both 615 and 629 work. If a 615 number isn't available, a 629 number covers the same area.
FAQs
What cities use the 615 area code?
Nashville and its surrounding counties, including Franklin, Brentwood, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, Hendersonville, Gallatin, Lebanon, Mount Juliet and Springfield. The same area is also served by 629.
What is the difference between 615 and 629?
None in terms of geography. 629 is an overlay on the same Nashville-area territory. 629 numbers have been issued since March 28, 2015, and 615 numbers date back to 1954.
Is Clarksville or Cookeville in the 615 area code?
Not anymore. Both moved to area code 931 in the September 1997 split, along with Columbia and Tullahoma.
Was 615 one of the original 1947 area codes?
No. In 1947 all of Tennessee used 901. 615 was created in 1954 for most of the state east of the Tennessee River's western bend.
Is 10-digit dialing required in 615?
Yes. It has been mandatory since February 28, 2015, as part of the 629 overlay. Local calls need the area code plus the seven-digit number.
What time zone is the 615 area code in?
Central Time: UTC−6 in standard time and UTC−5 during daylight saving time.
Do I need a Tennessee address to get a 615 number?
No. Virtual phone providers can assign a 615 or 629 number to a business anywhere and route calls to any device.
