Metro Atlanta's growth shrank 404 further: 706 split off in 1992 for Columbus, Augusta, and the mountains, and 770 split off in 1995 for Atlanta's suburbs, leaving 404 the urban core.
In 2001, 912 itself split into 478 (Macon) and 229 (southwest Georgia). Since then, Georgia has added overlays instead of splits: 762 over 706 in 2005, and more recently 668.
