In 1954, 507 split off from 612's southern territory, creating a three-band map: 218 north, 612 middle, 507 south.
As the Twin Cities grew in the 1990s, 612 shed more ground: 320 split off in 1996 for central Minnesota, and 651 split off the same year for St. Paul.
By 2000, 763 and 952 split away for the northern/western and southwestern suburbs, leaving 612 centered on Minneapolis alone.
