Philadelphia's suburbs forced the first split in 1994: 610 took the western and northern parts of 215's territory, leaving 215 the city and close-in suburbs.
The 1990s brought more codes — 724 for Pittsburgh's suburbs, 570 for the northeast — plus overlays 484 and 267 on the southeast codes, and 878 over 412/724 in 2001.
Growth continued into the 2010s: 272 overlaid 570 in the northeast in 2013, and 223 overlaid 717 in central Pennsylvania in 2017.
